Weird Art Month: Laurie Lipton

By Sam Reeve

Skeletons and skulls frequently appear in New York-born Laurie Lipton’s work, as does strange machinery and too many circuit boards. Her finely detailed charcoal and pencil drawings have made their rounds in Internetland, so you’ve probably seen her work at some point. They’re strange and beautiful and often haunting.

Check out Lipton’s website here for more of her work.

  • An artist has created an “edible opera” using biotechnology which uses a cool facehugger-looking helmet that creates edible algae from carbon dioxide which feeds the algae. “The singer has trained herself specially for this project so that she can further enhance her lung capacity to produce the best quality algae possible. The slightest changes in pitch and frequency can apparently determine the algae’s color, texture and even whether it will be sweet or bitter.”

  • Peninsula instructors prepare youth for the zombie apocalypse. “Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic,” a graphic novella geared to teens and young adults prepared by the Centers for Disease Control, has the answers. ‘If you are generally well-equipped to deal with a zombie apocalypse, you will be prepared for a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake or terrorist attack,’ said CDC director of public health preparedness Dr. Ali Khan, who appears as a character in the comic book. The zombie comic started as a tongue-in-cheek campaign, but has evolved into a popular way to impress young people with the importance of emergency preparedness, he explains on the CDC web site.” You can read the CDC zombie pandemic graphic novel here.

Vanity’s Creepypasta Halloween Countdown Day #28: Spooky Scary Skeletons

by Tracy Vanity

Fuck zombies, skeletons are fucking awesome. Did you know there’s a skeleton inside you right now?

Spooky shit.

That’s a lot of bones. Here’s more!

What can I say? I just have a soft spot for skeletons.

Ok, that’s more corpsey but you can start to see the skeleton. It’s the thought that counts.

Here are 6 cool skeleton facts:

1. A new-born baby has over 300 bones, over time some of these will fuse together. There are 206 bones in the average adult skeleton.

2. An adult skeleton accounts for around 14% of the body’s total weight. Experiments have shown that prolonged periods in weightless space will cause bones to lose weight and thickness.

3. Giraffes have seven neck bones, exactly the same number as humans.

4. Ounce for ounce, bone is stronger than steel and reinforced concrete. However doctors throughout the world treat tens of million of fractures a year.

5. One out of 20 people have an extra rib.

6. The hip bone or pelvis is six bones joined together. It is shaped like a bowl.

So as I was looking for creepy skeleton-related videos to post, I found this video of a guy putting a skeleton in a blender. Looks like a good Bizarro cooking course.

I know I’ve posted this song before but it’s so incredible that it had to be posted again and this is a Horrormas-sounding remix:

Vanity’s Creepypasta Halloween Countdown Day #6: The Mind

Einstürzende Neubauten made the soundtrack for this animation and pretty much made the soundtrack to my life.

If you like this video, definitely check out, We Are The Strange, a full-length animation with a similar style and some seriously trippy anime/80’s video game vibes thrown in.

(That awesome ferrofluid skull pic is from a beautiful art short called SCHIZOPHRENIA)
