Twisted Tuesdays: Playing In Hell

by Tracy Vanity

A lot of detail went into building this hell. A LOT!

That video reminds me of Marwencol, which you should watch if you haven’t already. It’s a documentary about a Mark Hogancamp, who makes an extremely detailed WW2 town called “Marwencol” in his backyard after being brutally attacked. The attack leaves him with brain damage and emotional trama. To get his motor skills and life back, he creates his own world which puts all of our G.I. Joe and Barbie play-time stories to shame.

Village of the Dolls (2010)

It’s a really beautiful movie and the pictures Hogancamp shoots of Marwencol are magnificent. Art is incredibly therapeutic and powerful, especially in Hell.

Weekly Weird Art: Xue Wang

By Sam Reeve

Chinese-born artist Xue Wang started out by earning a BA and MA in fashion before transitioning to painting. Her work, featuring doll-like figures, may at first appear to be cute, but is often twisted and unsettling.

Xue’s latest solo show, titled Time Off For Good Behavior, kicks off today at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, California.

You can find out more about Xue and her work by visiting her website.

Weekly Weird Art: Maria Rubinke

By Sam Reeve

When I think of the word porcelain, fancy dolls (or maybe toilets) come to mind. Danish-born artist Maria Rubinke‘s sculptures will change how you think of porcelain. They’re like a bizarro-horror take on the classic porcelain figurines that collect dust on old ladies’ shelves.

Weekly Weird Art: Shain Erin

By Sam Reeve

Shain Erin hails from California and has this to say of his creepy art dolls:

These are not comforting toys; they can be challenging and defiant, disturbing and enchanting, irrational and frightening, beautiful and sad. They have stories they yearn to tell, and they hold secrets they will never give up. I like to think of dolls as spirit vessels and the making of a doll a kind of offering or invitation. It’s always a collaboration between me and whatever spirit comes forward.

Some of his sculptures were featured here on Bizarro Central over a year ago, but he’s awesome so you get to look at more! You can view more of Shain’s work, or learn more about him, on his blog, Flickr or deviantART page.

Another glorious video gift from The Art of Bleeding: All Things Nice

by Tracy Vanity

What are girls made of?

Kim Fowley, dolls, hot nurses, female anatomy, floating nursery rhyme characters, tripped out medical fetish animation, beautifully disorienting music…what more could you ask for?
