Weekly Weird Art: Mario Martinez aka MARS-1

By Sam Reeve

I don’t pretend to know for a second how to describe art, and there’s a big part of me that has no inclination to get better at it. That being said, I’ve stolen something from Mario Martinez’s website that describes his art far better than anything else I’ve read.

The artist signature style is of vast, abstracted, quasi-extraterrestrial looking landscapes feature imagery of surreal distortions, contained within spherically convex transparent bubbles. Skillfully combining optical color blending with perspective line work, his painting techniques result in very three-dimensional forms, which echo the anatomy of architecture, and microcosmic structures of biology.

Mario Martinez is a young artist based out of San Francisco, California. He mostly paints, but also has some wonderful sculptures. See more of his work here.

Oh, nice. I’m especially digging the Afterthought. Art is meant to make you think, hence my respect for Andy Warhol’s work with alphabet soup.
