The cult section of the literary world

Happy Deathday Anton LaVey (Oct 29)

by Tracy Vanity

Calliope enthusiast and founder of the Church of Satan, Anton Szandor LaVey, died on this day back in 1997.

Since his death, rumors have been circulating that his death certificate mysteriously says he died on Halloween but no reputable sources can confirm this. I did find a site that accuses his daughter of faking his death certificate to impress cult followers. Given that the man’s life was dedicated to trolling, it’s no surprise that his life and legacy is shrouded with bizarre rumors and fantasy.

My favorite LaVey yarn is that LaVey knew Marilyn Monroe before she became famous. Story goes that Monroe worked at the Mayan Theater doing some “bump and grind” shows while LaVey played the organ and then she played his. Monroe’s handlers and the owner of the house of burlesque deny that she ever danced the cooch at their establishment or went anywhere near LaVey’s Satanic instrument.

LaVey told this story to impress Marilyn Manson who in turn put it in his book The Long Hard Road Out of Hell. I think it’s bullshit but still a funny story that shows LaVey’s propensity to tell tall tales. I’m sure he banged Jayne Mansfield though. Lucky devil!

  1. I love the costume idea used in the “dance with the devil” burlesque clip in the first video.
