Tasting the Obscene

Think you know your splatter films and have the best movie collection of anyone around? Think again.
“Splatter is Better” is the Holy Grail of splatter film blogs. Ever heard of Wife to be Sacrificed or Bloodsucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh? I hadn’t either until the lovely Toxaemia reviewed it. Not only are the movies super obscure and splatterlicious and the reviews fun to read, but the screen shots, which she takes herself, are definitely one of many highlights this gem of a blog has to offer.
Now that you’re excited to watch Horrors of Malformed Men or Japanese Hell, where can you pick up a damn copy?
I asked Toxaemia how she finds these awesome movies I’d never heard of before?
“In regards to aiding fellow smut fiends in search of cinematic carnage, I highly recommend a particular website that I use for cataloging my movie collection, called DVD Aficionado. I find it to be an invaluable resource, especially for those that are serious about movie collecting. The site serves as a massive, interactive database for official DVD releases all over the world, that does not require membership to use. The user can search for movies by title, genre, region, director, UPC #, etc. Once that information is given, a list including DVD Artwork, DVD release date, estimated cost and links to reputable online stores that may have copies for sale are provided. In some rare instances, links to online stores will be missing with discontinued or long out of print titles, this however, is not always the case.
Discount movie and music stores are also great places to search for out of print and obscure titles. If you live in the US check out Buy Backs (yourbuybacks.com) They have over 30 stores nationwide so there may be one in your state. Just beware of the prices, sometimes they can be a little steep, especially for rare titles.
For internet shopping I used Diabolik DVD, Amazon & Half.com
And for really obscure movies that are without official US or International Distribution try the grey market. I recommend two websites Cinema de Bizarre & Trash Palace. There’s loads of unheard of goodness to be discovered.
I hope that helps :)
Visit Splatter is Better (definitely NSFW unless your work allows you to peruse a lot of tits and gore instead of actually working, in which case you’re a lucky bastard!)
